Move-in Day

Dan dropped Waffle and Pony off today. He stayed for a bit, making sure they were settled and that we knew how to use the water fountain and timed feeder. He was understandably sad.

Waffle made herself at home pretty much right away but Pony hid under the bed and would barely look at me when I peeked at him. I think Pony is sad. Or maybe he is unhappy with my dusty floor.

The Visit

Shortly after we’d decided to meet Waffle and Pony we set up a time for Dan to bring Waffle and Pony for a visit — as much for us to meet them as for Dan to check us out.

Dan only had one cat carrier, so he brought the cats in separately. Waffle was first and unfortunately had pooped in the carrier, then walked in the poop. Her tail was soiled so Alex and I cleaned her up while Dan cleaned out the carrier and went to get Pony.

Both cats were wary, especially Pony. Waffle sniffed around, looked out the windows of the room we call the lodge (we thought it best to keep the cats in a confined area for now. Pony allowed himself to be petted, but only briefly. Waffle ended up lying under the loveseat and panting (it was getting warm in the lodge). After chatting and petting the cats (and bribing them with treats) we let them check out the rest of the house. They were both very curious.

Dan showed us how the cats would jump through a hoop made of his arms and how they would high-five you with their paws.

I definitely fell in love with them that day, but Dean and I said we’d have to think about it.

A few days later, after Dean and I discussed if we were ready for new cats I texted Dan saying we’d love for them to live with us. Dan said he and his partner were still processing it and wanted talk about it for a while. About a week later Dan told us he and his partner would be happy if we took Waffle and Pony.

Understandably Dan wanted as much time with Waffle and Pony as he could have, so the move-in date was set for the end of July. Waffle and Pony will be moving in on the 30th.

The Proposition

We were in Florida when Andrew called. It was our anniversary so I expected he was calling to wish us a happy 37th anniversary. He may have been, but soon got to the point of his call. He had an opportunity for us, a proposition.

Honestly I thought he was calling to get us to sign up for clean energy from the company he’d just started working for. I assumed we’d have to get back to him, not knowing any of the particulars. However, he wasn’t calling about that. He wondered how we’d like to adopt two young adult cats. He went on to explain the situation — their current owners were moving to Australia.

I’d decided, after Halloween died in 2015, we would have no more cats. I couldn’t deal with their last years — the uncertainty of when they it’s time to say goodbye, the sadness of their passing. Then, less than a month later when Mom went to live with my brother, we took in her elderly cat, Callie. Unfortunately Callie was not well and I think grieved for my mother. She never got used to living with us and died within a year of her moving in with us. Again I said, “no more cats” for the same reasons as before.

That was all fine and good, but in the past few years I’ve been thinking that it might be nice to have a cat or two to cuddle and love. I wasn’t planning on pursuing an adoption, but decided that if a cat fell into my lap I’d be more than willing to welcome a cat into our house. So we said we’d definitely like to meet them.

Andrew sent us some photos of Waffle and Pony, the cats that needed a new home.
